Yahoo is a US-based web service provider headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. It was founded in 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo in Palo Alto, California. It is primarily a web portal that provides products such as news, email, finance statistics and reports, sports updates search engines, instant messaging and more.
The name Yahoo is an acronym that stands for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle. In 1996 Yahoo went public and grew to be valued 300 million dollars in that year. It continued to expand throughout the 2000s until the dot-com bubble burst. In the past, Yahoo has partnered with Japan SoftBank Corporation, Netscape, AOL, and AT&T. Later Yahoo acquired Geo Cities, Broadcast.com, Hot Jobs and Overture Service Inc. In 2012 it had a revenue of 5 billion dollars and a profit of 3.94 billion dollars. At the time it was the highest profit margin of the Fortune 500 companies. Now Yahoo is run by the CEO Thomas McInerney, CFO Ken Goldman and COO Henrique De Castro and is currently owned by Verizon Media. Verizon acquired Yahoo in 2017 combining their phone and internet providing services with Yahoos web services. In 2016 it had 1 billion monthly active users and 204 million viewers across desktop and mobile. In 2017 they had 225 million users for email services. Yahoo is a worldwide service that includes the UK, Japan, India, and other countries. Its services can be used in 30 different languages. Yahoo’s biggest web portal competitors are Google and Microsoft Corporation’s Bing.
