About Wildlife Conservation Society

Wildlife Conservation Society was founded in 1895. The company works diligently to conserve more than two million square miles of wild places around the world. The company was originally known as the New York Zoological Society. The founders were Andrew H. Green, Henry Fairfield Osborn, and George Bird Grinnell. Also contributing to the founding of the Wildlife Conservation Society were Theodore Roosevelt, Madison Grant, members of the Boone and Crockett Club, and other notable New Yorkers. The Society manages four wildlife parks in addition to the Bronx Zoo including Central Park Zoo, New York Aquarium, Prospect Park Zoo, and Queens Zoo.

The three main goals of the Wildlife Conservation Society are Discovery, Protection, and Inspiration. The organization works with 170 scientists who hold PhDs and DVMs. These scientists help discover how nature works. This is to generate and share science to improve strategies and practices on a global scale. WCS protects over 16 of the world's most important terrestrial and marine regions. The Society empowers people to act in defense of wildlife. They appeal to individuals everywhere, no matter the location. In Africa, WCS conserves four regions. These include Central Africa & Gulf of Guinea, East African Forests & Savannas, Madagascar & Western Indian Ocean, and Sudano-Sahel. In Asia, WCS conserves six regions. These include Arctic Beringia, Greater Mekong, Melanesia, South Asia & Bay of Bengal, Southeast Asian Archipelago, and Temperate Asian Mountains & Grasslands. There are nine priority ocean regions. This includes Arctic Beringia, Central Africa, & Guinea, Greater Mekong, Madagascar & West Indian Ocean, Melanesia, Mesoamerica & Western Caribbean, New York Seascape, Patagonia, and Southeast Asian Archipelago.
