About Twitter
Twitter, Inc. is a social media company headquartered in San Francisco, California. Twitter is the company's social networking service. It used to run the Vine short video app and the Periscope live streaming service. Twitter was founded in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams and launched in July of that year. By 2012, more than 100 million users were tweeting 340 million tweets per day, and the service handled 1.6 billion search queries per day on average. In November 2013, the company went public. Twitter had over 330 million monthly active users in 2019.
On April 25, 2022, Twitter agreed to a $44 billion buyout by Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, in one of the largest private-equity transactions in history. Musk terminated the agreement on July 8. Twitter's stock dropped, prompting company officials to sue Musk in Delaware's Chancery Court on July 12. Musk announced his intention to buy the company for $44 billion, or $54.20 per share, on October 4; the agreement was finalized on October 27.
The origins of Twitter can be traced back to a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo. Jack Dorsey, a New York University undergraduate student at the time, proposed the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group. Work on the project started on March 21, 2006, when Dorsey published the first Twitter message at 12:50 p.m. PST (UTCâÂÂ08:00): "Just setting up my Twitter". Dorsey and contractor Florian Weber created the first Twitter prototype, which was used as an internal service for Odeo employees. On July 15, 2006, the full version was made public. Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Dorsey, and other Odeo members formed Obvious Corporation in October 2006 and acquired Odeo and its assets, including Odeo.com and Twitter.com, from the investors and shareholders. Williams fired Glass, who remained silent about his role in Twitter's founding until 2011. In April 2007, Twitter spun off into its own company.
The 2007 South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) conference was the tipping point for Twitter's popularity. During the event, Twitter usage increased from 20,000 to 60,000 tweets per day. "Twitter cleverly placed two 60-inch plasma screens in the conference hallways, exclusively streaming Twitter messages," Newsweek's Steven Levy observed. "Hundreds of conference attendees kept in touch with one another via constant tweets. The service was mentioned by panelists and speakers, and bloggers in attendance praised it." The reaction at the conference was overwhelmingly positive. Twitter was "absolutely ruling" SXSWi, according to blogger Scott Beale. Twitter, according to social software researcher Danah Boyd, is "owning" the conference.
