Pandora is one of the most established and well-known names in the streaming music industry, and it continues to grow and evolve. It was originally known for its recommendation engine, the Music Genome Project, and it was at the forefront of internet radio in the mid-to-late 2000s. Many rival apps have since caught up with and surpassed Pandora in terms of features, but the service retains relevance thanks to playlists, podcasts, album commentary, and artist tour information. These offerings may not be able to compete with the features of top services like LiveXLive, Spotify, Tidal, or even its SiriusXM Internet Radio parent company, but Pandora is a strong app with a presence on a variety of devices.

Pandora offers free and premium service levels, so you can listen to music without committing to a subscription. Free account holders get the usual ad-supported personalized stations, as well as podcasts and the ability to listen to music on demand. In this regard, Pandora is similar to Spotify, a PCMag Editors' Choice pick. Having said that, Pandora requires you to go through a few hoops before you can listen to your free music. Customers had to redeem a temporary Premium account and watch a video ad in order to listen to Wu-Tang Clan's Top Songs playlist. This is accomplished with a simple mouse click or button prompt on phone apps, but it feels unnecessarily obtuse given that most other services simply play the ad without prompting you first.

The $4.99-per-month Pandora Plus plan expands on the free tier by including ad-free personalized stations, unlimited skips, and offline listening. Premium, Pandora's most expensive plan, costs $9.99 per month and adds playlist creation and sharing to Pandora Plus' feature set. The fact that the playlist creation feature is restricted to Pandora's most expensive tier is extremely disappointing. LiveXLive, another Editors' Choice selection, has a similar, vexing limitation. Spotify, on the other hand, does not. Pandora also provides discounted Premium plans for students ($4.99 per month), active military and veterans ($7.99 per month), and families ($14.99 per month for six people).

Pandora's free plan is heavily ad-supported, and it makes no attempt to hide it. When you first launch the app, a fullscreen ad with a "Skip to Pandora" button appears. The web player prominently displays banner advertisements. They also occasionally completely replace the album art on the Now Playing screen of the mobile app.

Because personalized stations do not require active curation on the part of the listener, they are ad-free on Pandora Plus. However, once you begin actively searching for other songs to play, you may encounter some advertisements. Ads may also appear when you initiate a free Premium Session, as these are also powered by advertisements. Pandora Premium, on the other hand, offers blissfully continuous listening across all features. Furthermore, track skipping is restricted. After a few songs, you'll be prompted to "Get More Skips" by watching an advertisement or upgrading to Premium. The ads can run for 15-45 seconds but can be skipped after 15 seconds.

You begin your musical journey by browsing Pandora's many categories or typing an artist or song's name into the search box. For example, a "Prince" search resulted in Pandora displaying albums, songs, an artist page, and a Prince-based station. This is standard across competing streaming music services.

Pandora's Music Genome Project foundation provides a solid recommendation feature, which provides bullets of artists similar to what you're listening to. While listening to Prince's "When Doves Cry," Pandora suggested Michael and Janet Jackson, Sheila E., Marvin Gaye, and Earth, Wind, and Fire as similar artists, making it easy to find more music to keep the party going.

The album art is displayed in the center of the page, with lyrics, player controls, song favorite/ban icons, and song and artist information just south of it. The Pandora website has a simple interface, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Many other services provide extensive content through panel-driven interfaces, and while Pandora does as well, it pares things down and focuses on what you're listening to and what you want to hear.

Pandora's interface, unfortunately, has far too many different appearances. Various color schemes were discovered during testing, as well as a variety of page layouts that vary greatly depending on whether you're browsing, or on the Artist, Album, Now Listening, My Collections (listening history and saved albums or stations), or any other page. It's startling and irritating.

Furthermore, over the course of several testing days, the Pandora website was occasionally unresponsive or loaded pages at a snail's pace. In general, it worked fine, but there were times when customers would sit awkwardly waiting for a track to play, only to discover moments later that the page didn't register the mouse clicking. Usually, the technical team is quick to ensure that any issues with the platform doesn't last too long.

6. Do not consider your account cancelled until you hear back
7. It's important to keep the info about your cancellation, just in case!
