About AOL

When dial-up internet was king in the late 1990s, AOL was a major force, with over 30 million subscribers connecting via analog modems worldwide. Its integrated software was popular among first-time users, who were flocking to sign up. However, as broadband cable and DSL became more popular, AOL's dial-up user base shrank significantly. At its peak in 2011, AOL had roughly 10% of dial-up customers.

AOL was founded as Quantum Computer Services in 1985 by a few employees from Control Video Corporation (CVC), a company that sold Atari video games online. Quantum Computer provided games and other software to Commodore computer users. Service was extended to the Mac and Apple II in 1989, and then to DOS users in 1991 when the company changed its name to America Online (AOL). The company purchased ANS, a network services provider, in 1995, and two years later sold ANS to WorldCom in exchange for CompuServe's customer base, which WorldCom had recently acquired.

AOL purchased Netscape in 1999 and formed an alliance with Sun to sell Netscape's Web products. Ironically, AOL's Web browser was a direct competitor to Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser and Netscape's main rival. AOL merged with Time Warner in early 2001 to form the world's largest online information and entertainment conglomerate. For a time, the company was known as AOL Time Warner; however, the merger did not achieve the desired results, and AOL was spun off in late 2009. In the meantime, in 2005, AOL purchased Weblogs, Inc., which included the Engadget tech blog. Following the spin-off, AOL launched the competing TechCrunch blog in 2010 and The Huffington Post news site the following year. Verizon purchased AOL in 2015.
