Home Chef, which debuted in the United States in 2013, was one of the first subscription meal kits. It is a weekly meal kit subscription service that includes pre-portioned fresh ingredients as well as premade sauces and seasonings for easy cooking and assembly. The menu features a mix of comfort classics and more modern, chef-inspired dishes. Home Chef also offers Oven Ready Meals, 15-minute Meal Kits, Carb Conscious Meals, and Calorie Conscious Meals in addition to the core menu items. Customers simply enter an email address to begin the signup process and answer a few more simple questions about meal delivery preferences, such as how many servings per meal (two, four, or six) and the number of recipes per week (between two and six).

Customers enter a shipping address, choose a first delivery date from a list of options for the following weeks, enter payment information, and then begin selecting meals for the first delivery. Making changes is simple, and deliveries can be skipped or canceled using the online portal. Preportioned ingredients are packaged in recyclable plastic bags and grouped and labeled for each corresponding recipe, while perishable proteins are packed in vacuum-sealed bags at the bottom of the box.

Meals can be selected up to five weeks in advance online or through the Home Chef app. Every Friday, a new menu is posted. Anyone, not just customers, can view all weekly menu meals in advance, so you can see what kinds of meals to expect before committing to a subscription plan.

There are over 25 different meal options, each labeled for a different meal style, including the main Meal Kit dishes, Culinary Collection, 15-Minute Meal Kit, Grill-Ready, Oven-Ready, and Fast & Fresh, as well as a selection of a la carte items such as one breakfast, one bread, one dessert, and a variety of add-on proteins. Home Chef will recommend meals for your subsequent deliveries based on your initial preferences after your first order, but meals can easily be modified or swapped. All items were delivered in a partially recycled cardboard box with an insulated liner made of recycled cotton and denim. The insulated liner is fully recyclable, but it may need to be disassembled to separate the film from the liner filling. The box is also recyclable at the curb. The ice packs in the box can be reused or cut open, drained, and recycled with other plastic. The proteins for the meal kit were vacuum sealed and packed in a plastic bag together.

All premeasured meal ingredients were individually packaged in plastic bags and grouped by a meal in a resealable plastic bag with a handle, making it very easy to see what is inside and pull from the refrigerator when ready to prepare. The recipe name was also written on each resealable bag. The plastic bags were discovered to be not clearly labeled as recyclable on the bags themselves, but the Home Chef website's FAQ section indicates that all plastic bags found in the box can be recycled at locations that accept plastic bags. However, because not all cities and towns accept plastic bags as part of curbside recycling, much of this packaging may end up in the trash. Recipe cards are intended to be saved in a binder but are recyclable if you do not want to keep them.

Home Chef is ideal for semi-homemade meals centered on protein, a side, and a sauce. Home Chef is suitable for singles, couples, and families; serving sizes range from two to eight per meal and could thus provide leftovers for singles or couples ordering two or four as well as a family of four or five orders for eight. Home Chef is also suitable for those who prefer higher-protein meals (primarily animal protein) and a variety of richer meals.
