About groupon
Groupon is an American global e-commerce marketplace that connects subscribers with local merchants in 13 countries by offering activities, travel, goods, and services. Groupon was founded in Chicago in November 2008, and it quickly expanded to Boston, New York City, and Toronto. By October 2010, Groupon had 35 million registered users and was available in 150 cities across North America, as well as 100 cities across Europe, Asia, and South America. By the end of March 2015, Groupon had served over 500 cities worldwide, had nearly 48.1 million active customers, and had over 425,000 active deals in 48 countries.
Former CEO and Pittsburgh native Andrew Mason came up with the concept for Groupon. The concept piqued the interest of his former employer, Eric Lefkofsky, who invested $1 million in its development. The company was valued at $1.35 billion in April 2010. Groupon was "projecting that the company is on pace to make $1 billion in sales faster than any other business, ever," according to a December 2010 report conducted by Groupon's marketing association and reported in Forbes magazine and the Wall Street Journal.
Groupon reported a $9.8 million adjusted fourth-quarter loss in its first earnings release as a public company, disappointing investors. Additional investor concerns arose in March 2012, when the company restated its 2011 revenues downward.
In 2006, founder Andrew Mason was frustrated while attempting to cancel a mobile phone contract when the idea for Groupon was born. Mason reasoned that there had to be a way to leverage the collective bargaining power of a large number of people. Mason launched The Point in 2007, a web platform based on the "tipping point" principle that would use social media to bring people together to achieve a goal. The Point was designed to unite people around a common cause or goal. It gained only minor traction in Chicago until a group of users decided to make saving money their cause. They wanted to gather a group of people to buy the same product in order to get a group discount. Founder Eric Lefkofsky desired that the company pivot entirely to group purchasing. Groupon was founded in November 2008 as an offshoot of The Point.
Groupon is a combination of the words "group" and "coupon" and is the name of an e-commerce platform. Groupon's first deal was a two-for-one pizza deal at Motel Bar, a restaurant on the first floor of its Chicago headquarters.
The decision to concentrate on group purchasing proved wise. Groupon grew from a few dozen employees to over 350 in less than a year and a half. Revenue and bookings grew quickly as well, and the company was valued at more than $1 billion after only 16 months in business, making it the fastest company to reach this milestone.
When the company first launched, it offered one "Groupon" per day in each of the markets it served. Using The Point's platform, the Groupon functioned as an assurance contract: if a certain number of people signed up for the offer, the deal became available to all; if the predetermined minimum was not met, no one got the deal that day. This lowers the risk for retailers, who can use the coupons as both quantity discounts and sales promotion tools. Groupon made money in the early years, before revenue splits began to adjust as needed, by keeping roughly half of the money the customer paid for the coupon. Recently, that split may have shifted depending on a variety of factors.
Consumers can search and browse deals via web or mobile and can subscribe to receive emails featuring deals they are interested in based on preferences they input, unlike classified advertising. Groupon hires copywriters to create descriptions for the deals that appear in emails and on the website. Groupon's early promotional text strategy for the deals was seen as a contributing factor to the site's popularity, featuring a distinctive mix of thorough fact-checking and witty humor.
Some publications have raised concerns about the business model. For example, the Wall Street Journal reported that a successful deal could temporarily overwhelm a small business with too many customers, risking customer dissatisfaction or a lack of product to meet demand. In response to these concerns, Groupon officials have stated that the number of deals sold will be limited in advance to a number that the company can effectively service.
According to a 2015 report, 88% of merchants agree that their Groupon deal brought in new customers, and 82% of customers say they are likely to return to the merchant. Groupon's primary customer base in 2015 was female college-educated consumers. It was reported in 2010 that local merchants found it difficult to persuade Groupon to agree to a specific deal. According to the Wall Street Journal, Groupon rejected seven out of every eight possible merchant deals.
Groupon has a mobile app that allows users to browse, buy, and redeem deals by using the screen as a coupon. Groupon's channels have included: Groupon Goods, which launched in September 2011 and focuses on discounted merchandise; Groupon Getaways, which offers vacation packages and travel deals; and Groupon Live, where consumers can find discounts on ticketed events. In many countries, Groupon has also emerged as a check on price increases for certain essential commodities.
