About Flipboard
Flipboard has always believed that great stories move the world forward and that the truth is important. They were created as a one-stop shop for finding stories for your day, combining your favorite news sources with social content to provide a comprehensive look at everything from political issues to technology trends to travel inspiration. They have built a curated experience with a plurality of voices over the years, in partnership with the world's greatest publishers and with you, their community, where people can find quality stories on any interest, investing in their lives and passions. Their new mission is to advance the discussion by telling important and influential stories that not only keep people informed, but also inspire them to engage, learn, and lead.
Though there are numerous worthwhile iPad news-reading apps, Flipboard (free) remains the best of the best. Flipboard for iPad($445.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window), which was recently updated to version 3.0, now has a more streamlined interface, a daily curated magazine, and a new social media-like reading model that encourages you to follow topics, people, and curated magazines. Flipboard hasn't abandoned the elements that have made it so popular; it still deftly aggregates articles, videos, podcasts, and social media into an accessible but feature-rich, print-style digital magazine. My one major complaint? Flipboard still does not have dedicated offline reading support.
Flipboard begins by selecting a topic or topics from a grid of 18 options and tapping the Next icon. Flipboard will quickly compile your digital magazine and display the individual topics (along with The Daily EditionâÂÂmore on that later) in a series of panels as a result. Simply hold a square and then tap the X icon when it appears to kick a panel to the curb.
Touching the red ribbon in the upper-right corner opens a list of additional categories and allows you to experiment with different options. Note: If you enjoy sharing, favoriting, or syncing articles across devices, you should create an account or log in with your Facebook credentials. What's great about Flipboard is that it brings all of your favorite topics to youÂyou don't have to actively search for them. It's a breezy, effortless affair to kick back with an iPad in hand and scroll through content from The Associated Press, IGN, Los Angeles Times, and other outlets.
Most articles on Flipboard are presented as clean, minimalist pieces with black text on a white background, a few images, and a news outlet's logo. A few publishers require you to click through to their websites to read entire articles, which is a little annoying, but those occurrences are extremely rare.
More importantly, the app's navigation is incredibly smooth; I didn't experience a single hiccup during my time with it. Articles can, of course, be shared via email, social media, and other platforms. When you connect your Facebook or Twitter accounts to Flipboard, the app converts links from those feeds into slick-looking articles. Feedly, a competing iPad news-reading app does not have this feature.
Flipboard suggests that you follow related topics after you've read a few articles. For example, after reading some articles in the World of Warcraft section, Flipboard directed me to a variety of gaming-related topics. Flipboard's recommendations are fantastic for discovering new content. It also recommends magazines to read (i.e., user-curated collections). You can follow specific news outlets, such as The New York Times or The Daily News if you only want to read articles from those publicationsâÂÂa nice touch.
You can't read articles without an Internet connection by default, but you can download and install Instapaper, Pocket, or Readability to save individual pages for offline reading. Google Currents, a rival Android news aggregator, allows you to save articles to your device without the use of third-party apps.
Flipboard 3 introduces The Daily Edition, a curated newsmagazine for those looking for a quick update on breaking news. Consider it a cross between the now-defunct The Daily news-reading app and Buzzfeed. The Daily Edition operates as follows: A new edition is published every day at 7 a.m. local time, but stories are added as needed if breaking news occurs. Every weekday has a different theme; for example, Thursdays are all about fashion and style. Aside from the news, there's some light relief in the form of a daily song and a "Parting GIF."
Flipboard for iPad is an excellent newsreader that will convince you to abandon browser bookmarks and traditional RSS readers. Yes, you still need to download a separate app to save documents for later reading, but Flipboard is the best in its class and deserving of a PCMag Editors' Choice award.
Every day, millions of people use Flipboard to discover and share stories. They assist publishers and content creators in reaching new audiences who are passionate about the topics they cover. Everyone can use Flipboard for free. You begin by creating a Flipboard profile. You'll see "Create a Magazine" in your profile â Flipboard Magazines can be an extension of your website, a place where you can share stories, videos, and podcasts that link back to your website. By creating a Flipboard Magazine and consistently adding your content, you are reaching a new global audience, increasing traffic to your content, utilizing their tools to package and promote your work, and sharing stories with their engaged global audience.
