About Boston Globe

The Boston Globe is a daily newspaper published in Boston, Massachusetts. The newspaper has received 27 Pulitzer Prizes and has a circulation of nearly 300,000 print and digital subscribers. The Boston Globe is the city's oldest and largest daily newspaper.

The paper was founded in 1872 and was primarily controlled by Irish Catholic interests before being purchased by Charles H. Taylor and his family. It was privately held until 1973, when it was sold to The New York Times for $1.1 billion in 1993, making it one of the most expensive print purchases in US history. The New York Times Company sold the newspaper to Boston Red Sox and Liverpool owner John W. Henry for $70 million in 2013, after it had lost more than 90% of its value in 20 years.

The paper has been described as "one of the country's most prestigious papers." The Boston Globe was the first major newspaper in the United States to oppose the Vietnam War in 1967. The newspaper's coverage of the Roman Catholic Church sex abuse scandal in 2002 drew international attention and served as the inspiration for the 2015 American drama film Spotlight. The Boston Globe's editor is Brian McGrory, who took over in December 2012. The Boston Herald is The Boston Globe's main print rival, with a smaller circulation that is rapidly declining.

The Boston Globe was founded in 1872 by six Boston businessmen who pooled their $150,000 investment (equivalent to $3,392,917 in 2021). Eben Dyer Jordan, founder of the Jordan Marsh department store, and Cyrus Wakefield, founder of the Wakefield Rattan Company and namesake of the town of Wakefield, Massachusetts, were among the founders. On March 4, 1872, the first issue was published and sold for four cents (equivalent to $0.9 in 2021). Jordan hired Charles H. Taylor as a temporary business manager in August 1873; in December, Taylor signed a two-year contract to be the paper's general manager. He would serve as The Boston Globe's first publisher until his death in 1921 and was succeeded by four of his descendants until 1999.

The Globe, which began as a morning daily, added a Sunday edition in 1877. The Boston Weekly Globe, which catered to mail subscribers outside of the city, was published weekly from 1873 until it was absorbed by the Sunday edition in 1892. The Boston Globe began publishing an afternoon edition called The Boston Evening Globe in 1878, which ceased publication in 1979. The Boston Globe had become a stronghold by the 1890s, with an editorial staff dominated by Irish American Catholics.

Each lead editorial in the Globe was signed "Uncle Dudley" beginning with the Sunday edition in 1891 and expanded to weekday editions in 1913, a practice that editor Thomas Winship ended in 1966. In March 1980, the Globe published an editorial about President Jimmy Carter's speech, which included the unintentional headline "Mush from the Wimp" for a portion of the press run, attracting national attention.

Since 1981, the Globe's editorial pages have been separate from the news operation, as is common in the news industry. Editorials represent The Boston Globe's official position as a community institution. The publisher has the right to veto an editorial and typically decides on political endorsements for high office.

The Globe issued its first political endorsement in 1967 when it backed Kevin White in the Boston mayoral election. The Globe has consistently supported Democratic presidential candidates, such as Joe Biden in the 2020 election, but has occasionally supported Republicans in state and local elections, such as Charlie Baker for governor.

Describing the political position of The Boston Globe editorial page in 2001, former editorial page editor Ren Loth told the Boston University alumni magazine: The Globe has a long tradition of being a progressive institution, and especially on social issues. We support women's rights; We are pro-choice; we're against the death penalty; we're for gay rights. But if people read us carefully, they will find that on a whole series of other issues, we are not knee-jerk. We're for charter schools; we're for any number of business-backed tax breaks. We are a lot more nuanced and subtle than that liberal stereotype does justice to. James Dao became the editorial page editor in 2022.

Appearing in the Sunday paper almost every week is The Boston Globe Magazine. As of 2018, Veronica Chao is the editor, and contributors include Neil Swidey and Meredith Goldstein. Since 2004, the December issue has featured a Bostonian of the Year. Past winners include Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein (2004), retired judge and Big Dig whistleblower Edward Ginsburg (2005), governor Deval Patrick (2006), Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America founder and CEO Bruce Marks (2007), NBA champion Paul Pierce (2008), professor Elizabeth Warren (2009), Republican politician Scott Brown (2010), U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz and ArtsEmerson executive director Robert Orchard (2011), Olympic gold medalists Aly Raisman and Kayla Harrison (2012), three people who were near the Boston Marathon bombing, Dan Marshall, Natalie Stavas, and Larry Hittinger (2013), Market Basket employees (2014), and neuropathologist Ann McKee (2017).

The Boston Globe announced the publication of Design New England: The Magazine of Splendid Homes and Gardens on October 23, 2006. This glossy, oversized magazine comes out six times a year. Print subscriptions are available for Boston and the surrounding areas. There are also digital subscriptions available.
