About Amazon Music

Although Apple Music and Spotify receive a lot of attention, the world of streaming music services is much larger than those industry behemoths. Amazon Music Unlimited lacks some of the bells and whistles of competing services, such as live radio, and a recent price increase has reduced the value for Prime members, but it does offer more than 90 million songs, HD Audio, impressive Amazon device compatibility, and a robust podcast library. The PCMag Editors' Choice options LiveXLive, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Spotify, and Tidal provide a few more benefits, but Amazon Music Unlimited is an excellent all-around streaming audio service.

Amazon Music Unlimited, like Apple Music and Tidal, did not have a free listening tier when it first launched. Not any longer. Select ad-supported playlists and thousands of stations (such as All Hits, Fuego Latino, and Holiday Favorites) are now available via the web, Amazon Music mobile apps, Echo smart speakers, and Fire TV devices. Spotify's free tier, on the other hand, allows you to listen to the entire 60 million-song catalog. However, some albums are only available on Spotify Free after a two-week delay.

Of course, Music Unlimited's ad-free Individual tier also includes the industry-standard $9.99 per month premium plan. However, Amazon Prime members receive a miserly discount that reduces the fee to $8.99 per month (or $89 per year) in addition to their $139 per year Prime fees. No, a Prime membership does not include Music Unlimited. Amazon Music Prime is a subscription service.

In addition, Amazon offers a Family Plan for $14.99 per month (or $149 per year) that covers six people. This service competes with similar offerings from Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify, and Tidal. If you want to try before you buy, there is a massive 90-day free trial (which is reduced to 30 days for the Family Plan). Except for SiriusXM Internet Radio, Amazon Music Unlimited's trial period outperforms rival trial periods. There is also a 90-day trial period for that service. Another important promotion to keep an eye on is around Prime Day. New subscribers have their 90-day trial period extended by 30 days, giving them four months for free during this limited time period. This is a great deal for new members.

Owners of the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Look, Echo Show, Amazon Fire TV, and Amazon Tap also get a discount: they pay $4.99 per month, which is just a dollar more than LiveXLive's ad-free Plus plan. That's quite impressive. However, if you want to stream to multiple smart speakers, you must upgrade to an Individual or Family plan. The Amazon Music Unlimited voice-controlled device plans have one major limitation: They cannot be used to stream music via apps or a web browser; instead, one of the aforementioned devices must be used.

Students who are Prime Student members ($7.49 per month, $69 per year) receive a discount that reduces the Music Unlimited monthly fee to $0.99. Amazon Music Unlimited does not permit audio recording. If you want that feature, your only option is SiriusXM Internet Radio, the Editors' Choice for live audio streaming audio services.

Are you wondering what the distinctions between Amazon Music Unlimited and Amazon Music Prime are? Amazon Music Unlimited is a standalone streaming music service with over 90 million songs. Amazon Music Prime, on the other hand, is included with your Prime membership and offers over 2 million songs. Both are ad-free listening experiences available on a variety of devices.

Music Prime is a good option if you don't care too much about music and just want to dabble here and there. Having said that, you'll notice that some tracks and albums encourage you to subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited in order to hear them. For example, there was a time when Music Prime did not allow you to stream Taylor Swift's Reputation. Signing up for Amazon Music Unlimited updates the service and replaces Amazon Music Prime as your Amazon jukebox, removing the risk of accidentally launching the wrong streaming service.

Music Unlimited's increased library size makes it infinitely more appealing to use with Amazon devices. Previously, customers were frequently frustrated by Echo's inability to stream songs in their entirety due to licensing issues. They can now command an Echo to play the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Suck My Kiss" using Alexa voice-control technology, and it does so without a hitch.

Amazon's smart devices also provide behind-the-scenes commentary, known as Side-by-Sides. You can, for example, tell Alexa to "play Side-by-Side with OneRepublic," and Ryan Tedder will comment on songs from the band's latest album. Side-by-Side content is also provided by The Killers, Kongos, Norah Jones, and U2. It's similar to LiveXLive's DNA stations, but without the rich historical context that links past and present musicians.

You can also use an Amazon device to search for songs by lyrics, create playlists, and find songs that match your mood. It's fun to tell Alexa to play upbeat happy music and have the Echo play the "Pop To Make You Feel Better" playlist.

However, Amazon Music Unlimited does not offer live music. Sure, there are curated stations to enjoy, but nothing compares to Sirius XM's live radio, for example. Amazon is currently testing this feature with a separate app called Amazon Amp, but only time will tell if the functionality will be integrated into Music Unlimited.
