If you read a lot of books in a short period of time, you might find it more cost effective to sign up for an ebook subscription service like Amazon's Kindle Unlimited. It's essentially a library of over a million digital titles, many of which have audiobook versions that you can listen to, and you can 'borrow' a maximum of 10 titles at a time and save a total of 20 titles in your library. On the platform, you can find books in a variety of genres, though it was discovered that it is heavily skewed toward romance and self-published titles. This is ideal for the daring reader but not for those looking for specific authors or titles. Nonetheless, there are numerous best-sellers by well-known authors.

However, browsing on Kindle Unlimited can be a little frustrating. When you sign up, you're presented with a few options, such as 'favorites' or 'recommended' each with only 20 titles to browse through. If you want a better overview of what's available on the platform, open a desktop browser window and navigate to 'Browse The Catalogue,' which isn't available on the app or ereaders. Aside from that, you can read Kindle Unlimited on your phone or tablet using the Kindle app, in a browser window, or with your Kindle ereader. The best part is that you can switch between devices without losing your place because it all syncs almost instantly (give or take a few pages).

The most important thing to remember about Kindle Unlimited is that you will not own the books you choose to read; they will only be borrowed. If you already have ten titles in your library, you must return one in order to borrow another. Unlike a traditional library, however, there is no time limit on how long you can keep the ebook – read at your leisure and return when you're ready to discover your next read. If you're a fast reader, the monthly subscription fee for Kindle Unlimited may be well worth it over purchasing each book separately.

The monthly cost of Amazon Kindle Unlimited is $9.99/7.99/AU$13.99, which is comparable to the cost of several other streaming services. This monthly subscription grants you access to over a million ebooks, approximately 2,000 audiobooks that correspond to an ebook on the platform, and, in some countries, a limited number of magazines. Occasionally, Amazon will offer a discount on the monthly cost for a few months or an extended free trial, but these are only available to new Kindle Unlimited subscribers. You do get a 30-day free trial to try out the service before you pay. It is important to note that Kindle Unlimited is not included in the Amazon Prime subscription and must be purchased separately. If you are a Prime member, you can use the Prime Reading service for free, but you are limited to 1,000 titles at a time (otherwise works the same as Kindle Unlimited).

In comparison, ebook subscription service Scribd costs the same in some markets but slightly more in others ($9.99 / 10.99 / AU$14.99) and provides access to a wider range of content, including more magazines and audiobooks, podcasts, documents (including recipes and business templates), and free access to six additional educational and streaming apps, making it slightly more cost effective. Furthermore, there is no limit to the number of titles you can add to your personal library. The disadvantage is that Scribd cannot be used on any ereader. Where Scribd has far more audiobooks than ebooks, it's the other way around for Kindle Unlimited; that's because Amazon has its Audible platform dedicated to audiobooks. Kindle Unlimited is primarily focused on ebooks that can be read on your Kindle ereader or the Kindle app, with only a few thousand of those available with an Audible narration.

Kindle Unlimited has almost every genre of ebook you can think of, but it was discovered that there were a lot more self-published titles on the platform, a large portion of which were romance novels. You can search for a specific author or title on any device (including a Kindle ereader), but browsing the entire catalogue is best done on a desktop computer. As previously stated, when browsing through Amazon on a Mac or PC, there is an option to 'Browse The Catalogue' that is not available on the Kindle app or ereaders. Any title you add through the browser will, of course, become available on all devices where you have Kindle Unlimited enabled.

Contrary to its name, the catalogue isn't quite limitless, though a million titles is a lot. The number of items you can borrow is also limited – you can download 20 titles in total, but only borrow 10 at a time. If you want to add more, you must first 'return' a book. If you're looking for new releases, you'll be let down. Several well-known authors' books aren't available on the platform, and if they are, you'll have to wait a while before they become available on Kindle Unlimited.

Every month, some existing titles are removed from the platform to make room for new ones. If you have a book in your library that has been removed from the catalogue, you can still read it by downloading it to your device. While magazines are available to customers in the United States, they are not available in several other countries. The number of magazines available is quite limited, with Scribd offering far more. However, if magazines are your thing, you might be better off signing up for Readly, which has over 5,000 magazines to choose from.

Your library is easily accessible no matter what screen or device you're using Kindle Unlimited on. You can filter your Kindle Unlimited library with a single tab or click and start reading on any device, whether you're using a browser, the Kindle app, or a Kindle ereader. If you switch from one to the other, the book will open at the last page you were on; however, this is sometimes a few pages off when moving from an ereader to the Kindle app, but always spot on when moving from a browser to the app.

Of course, titles with both ebook and audiobook versions can be read or listened to, and you can do so even on a Kindle ereader – most recent models have Bluetooth support for pairing wireless headphones with. In fact, you can read and listen simultaneously, with the text sections highlighted as the narration progresses.
