About Vimeo
Vimeo, Inc. is a video hosting, sharing, and services platform company based in New York City. Vimeo focuses on delivering high-definition video to a variety of devices. The business model of Vimeo is based on software as a service (SaaS). They make money by selling subscription plans to businesses and video content creators. Vimeo subscribers have access to video creation, editing, and broadcasting tools, enterprise software solutions, and a way for video professionals to connect with clients and other professionals. The site had 260 million users as of December 2021, with approximately 1.6 million subscribers to its services.
Jake Lodwick and Zach Klein created the site in 2004 as a spin-off of CollegeHumor to share humor videos among colleagues, but it was put on hold to support CollegeHumor's growing popularity. IAC purchased CollegeHumor and Vimeo in 2006, and after Google purchased YouTube for more than US$1.65 billion, IAC focused more effort on Vimeo to compete with YouTube, focusing on providing curated content and high-definition video to differentiate itself from other video sharing sites. By 2009, Lodwick and Klein had left, and IAC had implemented a more corporate-focused structure to expand Vimeo's services, with current CEO Anjali Sud in place since July 2017. In May 2021, IAC will spin off Vimeo as a separate public company.
Vimeo was founded in November 2004 as a side project of web developers Jake Lodwick and Zach Klein to share and tag short videos with their friends by Connected Ventures, the parent company of the humor-based website CollegeHumor. The idea for a video-sharing website came after CollegeHumor received a large number of views from a posted video clip of the October 2004 Saturday Night Live show, which featured Ashlee Simpson's infamous lip-syncing incident. Lodwick came up with the name Vimeo as a play on the words video and me. As CollegeHumor grew in popularity, Lodwick and Klein focused their efforts on supporting the main CollegeHumor site. Over the next few years, Vimeo's user base grew only slightly, primarily through word-of-mouth.
IAC, owned by Barry Diller, purchased a majority stake in Connected Ventures in August 2006, drawn by the success of CollegeHumor, which had around 6 million visitors per month at the time. IAC discovered the Vimeo property while reviewing Connected Ventures' assets; this occurred at the same time that Google purchased YouTube for US$1.65 billion in October 2006. By the beginning of 2007, IAC had directed Lodwick, Klein, and Andrew Pile to work full-time on Vimeo in order to expand its capabilities.
Vimeo was focused on the content creator with better upload tools and better curation of content on the site to differentiate themselves from YouTube and other video-sharing sites that had appeared since Google's purchase, rather than on popularity. By October 2007, Vimeo had become the first video-sharing site to provide users with high-definition content via Flash-based high-definition video playback. While IAC's acquisition of Connected Ventures helped to focus Vimeo's direction, the corporate nature of IAC caused friction with many of CollegeHumor and Vimeo's original staff. Lodwick had planned to leave the company near the end of 2007, claiming that IAC's incorporation of business processes hampered their creativity, but he was fired a few weeks before. Klein departed in early 2008.
In November 2020, due to increased demand for Vimeo's services as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, IAC raised US$150 million for the subsidiary in anticipation of spinning it off as its own company, giving Vimeo a US$2.75 billion valuation. IAC formally announced plans in December 2020 to spin off Vimeo as a public company, with the process expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2021. Following this, Vimeo would become the 11th company spun out of IAC.
Another round of funding in January 2021 brought another $300 million, bringing the total valuation to an estimated $5 billion. The shareholders of Vimeo agreed to go public on May 14, 2021. On May 25, 2021, the company was fully spun out as its own entity and began trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol VMEO.
Vimeo acquired Wirewax, a suite of interactive video tools, and Wibbitz, an AI-based video creation platform, in November 2021. Vimeo demonstrated the use of Wirewax's interactive tools in a new monthly "Video Matters" video series featuring the best videos on the platform. The company also introduced Vimeo Events in November, allowing users to schedule webinar-style experiences alongside other video content.
Vimeo announced in March 2022 that it would begin limiting bandwidth to all users to 2 terabytes per month, a rate that they estimate will affect only 1% of all users. Users of Vimeo had reported being approached to purchase higher tier accounts just prior to this change, but Vimeo apologized for this approach and felt it was better to set the flat bandwidth rate. Going over this rate would have no effect on any videos the user had on the service, and they would work with users to offer tiered options or to help them transition away from Vimeo and onto other services if that was their preference. In 2020, Vimeo will also introduce video chapters.
